How is hospice care different from other types of medical care?

Hospice care is unique because care is provided in the patient's home. A plan for care and visits by the healthcare team is created and specialized for each patient and their family members. These visits can and will change as your needs change. Our interdisciplinary team of professionals are all available to play a role in this care plan. The entire approach to patient support is focused on the alleviation of pain and other symptoms.

What if my condition improves?

It is not unusual for individuals receiving hospice care to actually see improvement in their overall health status. Once symptoms are managed some people choose to return to their regular healthcare plan, knowing that they can return to their hospice benefit if further need arises.

Can I continue to visit my primary physician or other specialists?

Hospice Family Care works under the direction of the patient's primary physician or specialist. When a primary physician or specialist is not present, a Hospice Family Care physician will fulfill that medical role. Continuing to visit your doctor is encouraged and the hospice care-giving staff can assist.

Must there be a caregiver in the home?

While it is not essential for a full time caregiver to be in the home, before hospice services will begin, safety is one of our primary concerns. Your hospice team will work with you to maintain your independence for as long as possible. Social Workers are available to provide you with resources at any time that you require additional assistance.

What services does Hospice Family Care provide for the family?

At Hospice Family Care, the family is included in all aspects of the plan of care. Emotional and spiritual support is offered 24 hours per day. We offer a monthly Caregiver's Support Group so that you have access not only to community resources and information, but also to meet others who may share similar experiences.

Is there a difference between a profit and not-for-profit hospice?

Profit and not-for-profit is a designation for tax purposes. All hospices, regardless of whether they are profit or not-for-profit are reimbursed exactly the same way by Medicare. They each are required to abide by the same Medicare regulations, and must provide the same core services.
The Hospice Family Care has a not-for-profit foundation that provides funding for needs not related to patient care, but still enhances quality of life to patients and their families.
